The Life of Our Lord Jesus

It was essential for publishers to be able to resort to steady sellers: titles they could keep republishing because there was an ongoing demand. They offered stability in their otherwise risky undertaking. Het leven van Christus (The Life of Christ) by Ludolph of Saxony († 1377) is a good example. The manuscript was distributed widely and in printed form, it also appeared in numerous editions. The woodcuts were easily re-used or copied.

Ludolphus van Saksen, Vita Christi. Antwerpen, Henrick Eckert van Homberch, 1512. Den Haag, Koninklijke Bibliotheek: KW 227 A 6. NK 1409.
