The manuscript remained an important medium even in the sixteenth century. Because printing a book required quite an investment, not all texts were printed. It was not necessary for some texts for private use to be distributed widely. This book contains texts that were written at the monastery of the Brethren of the Common Life in Gouda in 1516 and 1534. The text in this manuscript is so tightly laid out that it is hard to see any difference from printed books of the same period.
