Each customer chose which manual decorations he wanted included in the printed text. Depending on his taste and the available budget, he decided how he would have the book adapted after printing. This can be seen in these two copies of the Epistelen ende evangelien by Gerard Leeu: in this one, the initials are coloured only with red and white, while in a second copy, green and blue have also been used and the pen-work is different. This means that separate copies of the same edition may look completely different.
