The Psalms Explained

With Portrait of the Author

The Edict of Worms (1521) declared Luther an outlaw. From then on, printers of works inspired by Luther were at risk. Most texts by Protestant authors appeared anonymously or under a false address. The colophon of these commentaries on psalms reads that the book was printed in Basel by Adam Anonymus. In reality, it was Antwerp printer Joannes Hillen van Hoochstraten. Bugenhagen was a supporter of Luther and all his works were prohibited in 1526.

Johannes Bugenhagen, Die souter. Verclaringhe des gheheelen psalters. Bazel [=Antwerpen], Adam Anonymus [= Joannes Hillen van Hoochstraten], 1526. Den Haag, Koninklijke Bibliotheek: KW 1084 C1. NK 508.
