Index of Prohibited Books

No votes yet

To fight the Reformation, Charles V commissioned the theological faculty of Leuven University to make an inventory of all heterodox books. This first index of prohibited books appeared in Leuven in 1546. It contains many Bible translations published in Antwerp, with the name of the publisher and the year of publication. From then on, printing, selling, owning and reading these books would be severely punished.
