Luxury Version

Thanks to the art of printing, a much larger group of people came into contact with books. But this did not prevent the emergence of a dichotomy. Some books were so expensive that only the elite could afford them. That was the case with Der dieren palleys, a Dutch adaptation of the Latin Hortus Sanitatis. Because of its many illustrations, the book was extremely expensive and therefore only the well-to-do could afford to buy it.

Der dieren palleys. Antwerpen, Jan van Doesborch, 1520. Den Haag, Koninklijke Bibliotheek: KW 226 A 19. NK 1667.
